Itachi's family seemed normal in the eyes of Sasuke, but there are a lot of hidden feelings in their household. As Itachi grew to be gifted child, his parents felt a small sense of fears towards their son who was excelling even beyond their own abilities at such a young age. His father even states that Itachi's personality prevents him from getting close to people and both he and his wife grow quiet when they think about Itachi.

Before Itachi killed off the Uchiha clan along with his parents, Sasuke idolized his older brother and asked him to teach him all the time. Growing up to be like a child prodigy like Itachi was Sasuke's dream and he aimed to train hard everyday because of his goal. Even though Itachi did seem to be a loving brother towards Sasuke, he always made promises with Sasuke he wasn't able to keep due to his job as the Anbu squad leader. However, Sasuke always forgave him for his broken promises. The last night with his family, Sasuke asked Itachi to teach him how to throw shuriken and Itachi had to shoo him off and apologize for breaking another promise. But before he left, Sasuke noticed Itachi grow quiet and leave the house looking burdened.

When Sasuke confronted Itachi after realizing that his brother killed his parents, Itachi angrily tells Sasuke that he lived hating him and tortured him mentally with his Sharingan eyes. After Sasuke is completely immoble, Itachi orders Sasuke to live with hatred against him and try to avenge the Uchiha clan by coming after him. The reasons behind Itachi's murder spree are unknown, but it is hinted that he was betrayed in some way by the Konoha village and the Uchiha clan. Also, when Itachi threatened Sasuke to come after him when he grew stronger, it was obvious that he meant what he said.

Even now when Sasuke is one of the strongest among the Konoha genins, his anger against his brother never faded and he made sure to train and stay alive to avenge the murder of his family. When Sasuke confronted Itachi for the first time since that night when he was a child, Sasuke immediately attacked him but wasn't even able to touch Itachi because his power was still inferior to his brother. Itachi didn't want to bother with Sasuke (since he was after Naruto at that time) so he quickly mentally tortured him the same way he did the night he murdered his parents and when he was finished, he ordered Sasuke to continue living with hatred.

Their brotherly love is tragic, since now Sasuke holds nothing but hatred and contempt towards the older brother he admired so much. Itachi's feelings are still not revealed, but it is obvious that he wants Sasuke to become as strong as possible so he could one day become a challenge to him. Either Itachi's intentions to keep Sasuke alive are because of his hindering love for his family or a twisted reason because he wanted to compare his strength to his little brother, it's certain that the only family Sasuke has left is the one man that he intends to kill.
